Hands on Review with the Saris Edge 2 Bike Rack
If you’re searching for a heavy-duty bike rack that can manage everything from lightweight road bikes to hefty eBikes, the Saris Edge 2 is worth a serious look. We recently had the chance to test this premium rack and came away genuinely impressed with its performance, thoughtful design, and ease of use.
The Lab
The Saris Edge 2 weighs 65 pounds. It supports two bikes with a maximum of 80 pounds each, works with 2-inch hitch receivers, and is rated for use with RVs—including Class A, B, and C motorhomes. Assembly was straightforward and didn’t require tools. The rack includes a hitch pin lock and an integrated cable lock, both of which use the same key for convenience.
The design is frame-free, meaning it never contacts your bike’s body—only the tires—making it safe for carbon frames and delicate finishes. It folds up compactly and is relatively easy to remove and store when not in use.
Here are the wheel/tire specs it can hold
Wheelbase compatibility: Up to 53”
Fits tire sizes: 24”–29” x 3” and 27.5” x 5”
Features That Make a Difference
One of the standout features of the Saris Edge 2 is its one-handed clamping arm. It locks automatically when positioned over the wheel and is just as easily released by pressing a spring-loaded lever. This means you can load and secure your bike with one hand while supporting it with the other. The rack also comes with an integrated cable lock, which you can use to secure your bikes when stopping for coffee or lunch. However, it’s recommended to use the cable lock only when the vehicle is stationary, as it may touch the bike frame and cause wear while driving.
The rack has a few positioning options that make it even more versatile. It tilts downward to allow trunk or hatch access without removing the bikes. When not in use, it folds up neatly against your vehicle and stays out of the way. The low-profile, flat-folding design is especially helpful for van owners who need to open rear doors. It also has a diagonal position if extra clearance is needed.
What truly impressed us was the rack’s built-in anti-wobble system. Unlike older styles that require tools or separate attachments, this system uses a twist knob integrated into the rack itself. Once tightened, the rack becomes incredibly stable. We drove through city potholes and even took it out on mountain roads, and the rack held firm throughout. It’s a good idea to occasionally check that the knob remains fully tightened after long drives, as it doesn’t lock into place.
Is the Edge 2 Right for You?
This rack is perfect for urban riders, eBike owners, RV travelers, and trail enthusiasts who value quick, hassle-free loading. Its one-handed operation and smooth clamping mechanism make it ideal for people who are loading and unloading frequently. Because the trays are not tiered or offset, you may encounter minor clearance issues if you’re transporting two bikes with similar geometry, like a road bike and a gravel bike. However, the adjustable rear-wheel cradle can help with that, and bikes with dropper posts can be easily lowered to avoid interference.
The Saris Edge 2 sits at a premium price point, retailing at $999, but the build quality and features justify the cost. It’s easy to use, secure, and built to handle modern eBikes that push traditional rack limits. After a few hundred miles of use—including rougher roads and high-traffic city routes—we’re confident in saying this is one of the most versatile, user-friendly racks available today. If you’re hauling heavy bikes and want a rack that balances durability with convenience, the Edge 2 is a solid investment.
