More than a cargo bike, The ETILIY Bike
Built for the demands of daily life. The Benno RemiDemi XL is one of five in our electric cargo bike group test. With a retro look, fat tires and more accessories than you can imagine, how will the RemiDemi XL stand out in our Cargo Bike Roundup?
Coming in at $4599 for the Class 3 Bosch powered RemiDemi XL, we have the more affordable Class 1 Bosch Performance spec on test. This has 20” wheels with 3.6” tires, an aluminum frame with a steel fork. The Remi Demi XL has a max payload capacity of 355lbs and weighs in at ~65lbs.
Overall, Benno has a pretty good component spec on the RemiDemi XL. All of which we like and don’t see much room for needing to upgrade.
Build and Specifications
Benno Bikes is no stranger to the electric cargo bike category, from the Boost to the 46er and even the RemiDemi, Benno has made quite an impact for their unique looks. With their Etility Design®, Benno says they’ve added the extra dose of Etitlity so you can bring everyone along for the ride.
Sharing the same chassis and components, there are two models of the RemiDemi XL in three different colors. At the higher end is the Performance Sport model for $4599. This is likely to be the crowd favorite with the Bosch Performance Sport drive unit and a Class 3 (28mph) rating.
Our test rig is a bit more kind to our wallet with a Class 1; Bosch Performance drive unit. This is a 250w mid-drive with 65Nm of torque. A Bosch LED remote sits atop the handlebars for a discreet and low profile control. It is compatible with the Flow app from Bosch. At purchase you can choose between a 400Wh or 545Wh single battery but it is dual battery compatible.
Expect a range of 25-75 miles on the RemiDemi XL with the Bosch Performance and a 545Wh battery.
With a mixed Shimano Acera and Sora 9-speed drivetrain, the RemiDemi XL cruises on 20″ x 3.6″ wide fat tires. Magura MT Thirty brakes provide the necessary stopping power. A 4-piston front caliper with 180mm rotor and a 2-piston rear caliper with 160mm rotor.
The RemiDemi XL will come with the fenders, lights and a rear rack with a 130-lb carrying capacity. The bike as a whole has a load capacity of 355-lbs and it weighs about 65-lbs depending on the accessory selections.
A 4130 chromoly fork accompanies the Alloy frame for a stiff yet comfortable riding experience. At about 19.5″ from the ground, the RemiDemi XL has a very low standover height and can accommodate riders between 5’1″ and 6’2″ comfortably.

Rider Fit and Comfort
The RemiDemi XL is about 74-76” for overall length, depending on accessories. Compared to other cargo bikes on test it is on the shorter side but surprisingly can fit two Yepp seats on the rack. The rack sits at 26.5” from the ground, which is nice and low. Easy to lift kids up or to load up any gear.
It is rated to fit riders between 5’1” – 6’2”. Myself and other testers fount that it feels smaller compared to the others, but more so felt tighter in the reach than some of the other bikes. That being said, as the ride progressed and memories of other bikes drifted away, progressively the reach didn’t seem to feel as tight. Other testers between 5’4″ and 5’6″ found it to fit like a glove and really enjoyed it.
It is well balanced and the front end tracks well. It corners nicely and is easy to maneuver… at slower to mid-speed. At full speed the shorter wheelbase, small wheels, and front center body positioning leads to not feeling as confident taking corners. By no means did I feel held back, just a bit more on the brake to get into the comfortable window of speed for assertive handling.
Who is the RemiDemi XL for?
Take your pic, two kids, two kids carriers, a pet, or purely cargo, there are plenty of configurations to outfit the RemiDemi XL for the optimum experience.
The RemiDemi XL is a great fit for someone looking to take on their urban commute with the Classy retro vibes that Benno has to offer. Along with an excellent and powerful drive unit, the Benno ecosystem has an abundance of accessories to make a great bike greater.
Final Thoughts
This is the Class 1 model so I did find myself wishing for a bit more umph as I would assume most of you would. Thankfully the Class 3 version is an option, overall the Bosch crushes. Unloaded for our12 mile test loop, my average speed was 16.65 mph. This was in full boost turbo mode, pedaling at the top of the PAS where the motor starts to regulate and bounce on and off at the threshold of assistance.
Overall range with the 545Wh battery left us with 61% battery left and estimated 19 miles left of assist on the test loop. This goes to show the Class 1 Bosch Performance is efficient and doesn’t go through the battery as fast as the Performance Sport with that Class 3 rating.
All in all, the RemiDemi XL is a solid performer and for under $4k its well built, very smooth, the frame itself feels very rigid and stiff but that’s not translated to the rider feel, those fat tires help make it ride very smooth.
