The Showers Pass Men’s Basecamp Merino Hoodie is a a great mid-layer for or hoodie for those in between weather days. The weather has started to cool off and it is nice to have a hoodie that can breathe with you on a chilly morning or evening ride.  This has been a nice piece to have as summer transitions into fall. It is made of 95% merino wool with a polyamide blend to keep it from shrinking in the wash.

The hood on is nice and spacious as well to help keep your head covered in inclement weather. Having a 3/4 zip is a nice addition in case you want to throw this on after you’ve already put your helmet on. The length on the back of the Men’s Basecamp Merino Hoodie is a bit longer than the front to keep you covered when pedaling.

The Lab

The Basecamp Merino Hoodie is made of an all-season 230 gsm midnight fabric. It has a zippered kangaroo pocket on the front that holds just the right amount of stuff. The hoodie has UPF 40 sun protection if you are trying to keep those rays off you. Their is a reflective showers pass label sewn on the hem on the rear to give a hint of visibility when the light gets low. Since the hoodie is made with 95% merino wool it is naturally moisture wicking and odor resistant. Both bonuses if you are riding to work in this hoodie.

The Basecamp Merino Hoodie has a larger hood to cover your head in inclement weather. The 3/4 zip on the hoodie is nice to have in case you want to throw it on without taking your helmet off. The length on the back of this hoodie is cut a bit longer to keep you covered when pedaling.

Conclusion

The first thing I noticed when I pulled the hoodie out of the box was how soft it was. The fabric they chose has a very good hand feel to it. Along with feeling good in hand it is also very lightweight. That made me a bit skeptical on the warmth it would bring, but after first wear out on a chilly morning that was put to rest. The hoodie breathed well but kept in the warmth my body was creating.

The Basecamp Merino Hoodie has a comfortable fit, slightly on the looser side. I am 5’8″ and the size small fits me well. I enjoy that it is a bit longer in the back to cover my behind from the elements when riding. The color of the hoodie tested is Harvest and I am a fan of this color. I do enjoy my muted, darker colors, but when out on the bike it is nice to have something brighter to keep you more visible to other people on the road. It isn’t a neon hi-vis yellow, more of a mustard yellow color. Price point for this hoodie is up there, but Showers Pass has made a nice mid-weight layer for those chilly, but not cold mornings. IF you are looking for a well made merino hoodie for commuting or lounging in, the Basecamp Merino Hoodie may be the one for you.
