A lightweight and budget friendly ebike.

Ride1Up has been bringing budget friendly and affordable ebikes to the market for a few years now. New to their lineup is the Roadster V3. We reviewed the Roadster V2 in the past and enjoyed what I had to offer. With some added features and upgrades, we were looking forward to reviewing the Roadster V3.

Roadster V3 Design

The Ride1Up Roadster v3 is a Class 1-3 electric bike with pedal assist up to 28mph, and it also has a thumb throttle that will take you up to 20mph. The motor is a Mivice 500 watt rear hub motor that produces 50nm of torque. Powering this bike is a 360 watt hour that is UL Certified  battery with Samsung cells and it is removable to charge it off the bike.

The Roadster v3 features Ride1ups intui-drive sensory system, which is a torque sensor that is said to deliver a responsive but smooth power. The display is a small 1.3” two-tone screen with the buttons and throttle integrated onto it. This version we are reviewing is the 10 speed, chain drive train. This uses Shimano Deore shifters and has a 42 tooth front chainring and 11-36 tooth cassette.

Additionally, it has 2 piston, hydraulic disc brakes by Tektro front and rear. The tires are 700x45c Schwalbe G-One RS gravel tires. Moreover, it comes with front and rear fenders, a front light and rear light. The saddle is a Selle Royal Saddle, and the grips are ergonomic grips by Ergotec. Furthermore, the cables are routed through the stem to keep them hidden.

For sizing, it comes in a small or large for the high step version, as well as a low step version. The Roadster v3 weighs around 40 pounds and has an estimated range between 20-40 miles with a price tag of $1295. Also, there is a single speed belt drive version for the same price.

What we like about the Roadster v3

Firstly, the Roadster v3 is a good looking bike, with its minimalist design with nothing done over the top. It is definitely a nice step up from the Roadster v2 in a few key areas. The larger battery as well as the stronger motor are notable changes from the previous version. Overall, the quality of the bike  feels solid and it doesn’t feel like any corners were cut.

This was our first experience on the Mavicie hub motor, and it is very quiet and smooth. When you step on the pedals to put some power down you can feel it react to your input and gets you moving smoothly. Pair that together with the intui-drive torque sensing technology, and you get a natural pedaling experience from the lowest to highest pedal assist modes. For the overall ride, the Roadster v3 is comfortable with the flat bars and the ergonomic grips.

The Selle Royal saddle is nice, but personally I would change it to something like the Ergon SR All Road. This bike here is a size small in the high-step version, and coming in at 5ft 8 this bike is a good fit for me. The reach to the bars is just right and the seated position is upright and comfortable.

The spec of this bike is also a stand out. For the 10 speed version here, the Shimano Deore groupset gives a solid range of gears with smooth shifting you can expect from Shimano. Having Schwalbe GS-one RS Super Race tires come with the bike is also a big plus, this is definitely a higher end tire, and it looks great with the tan sidewalls. For this bike, this tread pattern fits well, as it is not super knobby, but has some grip if you want to take it off the pavement.

Overall looks of the bike were well thought out and from first glance the Roadster V3 doesn’t look like an ebike. Some details such as routing the cables through the stem help the bike look much tidier. Couple that with  the small display and you have a nice, clean looking cockpit. The display is just big enough and you can see crucial information on there like speed even in direct sun. Additionally, having the throttle integrated onto the screen keeps the handlebars less cluttered as well.

The integrated lights are a nice fit on the bike, and the rear light in the rear fender is a good touch. Having those fenders is nice for when the roads get wet to keep the water off of you. It was hard to fin anything notable that we didn’t like about the Roadster v3. Then again, if  you aren’t a fan of the mint color, it does come in black.

Final Thoughts

Living in a much hillier area I opted for the 10 speed version, just to have the gearing to get up some of the steeper hills. Having those gears was very beneficial in the steeper terrain. If you live in a flatter area, the single speed belt drive would be a solid option.

For the price of $1295, the Roadster v3 is a great value for what it has to offer. Throw on the rear rack option that is available and you have yourself a great flat bar commuter. If you are someone looking to get an ebike for under $1500, the Ride1Up Roadster v3 is a definitely a great option.
